Accountability

While we use the SMART goal framework (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound) for our weekly goals, quarterly goals can feel bigger, broader, and harder to nail down with that same level of precision. Here’s a better approach:

1. Quarterly Goal = Direction + Intention

Your quarterly goal doesn’t need to be laser-specific. It’s your North Star. The quarterly goal should reflect where you're headed in your growth as a man, a boyfriend, a father, a leader for each of the two categories of focus on your wheel of life.

For the two areas you're focusing on in your Wheel of Life, ask yourself:

  • What is the theme of this next season in my life?

  • Where do I want to feel proud of myself 3 months from now?

  • What area of my life is asking for deeper attention?

2. Quarterly Goal Format

Keep it rooted in growth and self-leadership. You might write it like this:

  • Open myself to romantic connection by becoming more emotionally available and aligned with what I truly want in a partner.

  • Build deeper emotional presence in my relationship with my partner.

  • Develop consistency and follow-through in my habits and commitments.

  • Work through my resistance to expressing anger in healthy ways.

  • Strengthen my sense of purpose and clarity in my career.

These are clear enough to focus you, but flexible enough to allow exploration.

3. Use SMART for Weekly Goals

Each week, break the quarterly vision down into SMART steps:

  • What will I do this week to move toward that bigger goal?

  • How will I know I made progress?

  • How will I hold myself accountable?

Examples:

  • Quarterly Goal: Open myself to romantic connection by becoming more emotionally available and aligned with what I truly want in a partner.

  • Week 1: Journal for 20 minutes about past relationships — what worked, what didn’t, and what I deeply want now.

  • Week 2: Go to one event or social activity where I can meet aligned people.

  • Week 3: Ask one trusted friend to set me up or introduce me to someone.

  • Week 4: Practice 5 minutes daily of heart-opening breathwork or meditation.

  • Quarterly Goal: Deepen emotional presence with partner.
Weekly SMART Goal: Have a 30-minute check-in with my partner, practicing full presence and listening without interruption.

  • Quarterly Goal: Strengthen purpose in my career.
Weekly SMART Goal: Spend 1 hour journaling on what gives me energy at work and what drains me.

Bottom Line:
Let your quarterly goal come from the heart. Let your weekly goals come from the calendar. Quarterly = compass. Weekly = steps.
